Abstract
Background: An increase in cholesterol levels, or hypercholesterolemia, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia in Indonesia is quite high, reaching 28%. In the working area of UPTD Puskesmas Kadugede, based on a preliminary study, there were 61 hypercholesterolemia patients in 2024, and most of them had not received journal book-based health education. Journal book media is considered effective for increasing knowledge and adherence. Objective: To determine the effect of journal book-based health education on the level of knowledge, dietary adherence, and cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolemia patients in the working area of UPTD Puskesmas Kadugede in 2025. Method: This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental one- group pretest-posttest design. The study population was 61 hypercholesterolemia patients, with a sample of 38 respondents taken using a purposive sampling technique. Results: Education through a journal book significantly increased the level of knowledge (p-value 0.000) and dietary adherence (p-value 0.000). The average knowledge score increased from 3.63 to 9.63, while the adherence score increased from 3.34 to 6.37. The average cholesterol level also experienced a significant decrease, from 234.74 mg/dL to 226.68 mg/dL (p-value 0.000). Conclusion: Health education through journal book media is effective in increasing knowledge and dietary adherence and lowering cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolemia patients. This educational medium can be an alternative strategy for health promotion in controlling non-communicable diseases
